Support for Families of Children with Disabilities
by Melanie Heimburg
Like all children, children who have special needs thrive when given opportunities to grow. Like all children, they also deserve the opportunity to develop to their maximum ability. To help their children, parents and caretakers need knowledge and support—and parents and caretakers of children with special needs sometimes need a little more information and a little more support.
Founded in 1982, San Francisco-based Support for Families of Children with Disabilities has been providing families with the information, support and resources they need to make informed choices for their children with any kind of disability or special health care need.
SFCD is led by staff, volunteers and board members who are largely family members of children with special needs. The nonprofit organization offers fee-free support groups, a resource library, parent mentoring, educational workshops, counseling, community outreach and more.
SFCD’s newest program: 4-As (Arts and Activities for All) links families to opportunities in the community where individual with disabilities and their families can have a successful experience at arts-related performances and activities in the greater Bay Area. Find a fun event for your child or post a new event at SupportForFamilies.org/ArtForAll.
